Less than a week after suffering a brutal knockout loss to Charles Conwell on the undercard pf DAZN’s “Usyk vs. Witherspoon” event in New York City on Saturday (Oct. 12, 2019), Patrick Day has passed away as a result of his injuries.

DAZN issued a statement confirming the junior middleweight’s passing.

DAZN is incredibly saddened to learn about the passing of Patrick Day. Our heartfelt thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

Day was knocked down a couple of times by his opponent before getting clipped with two overhand rights and then a left hook that dropped him, forcing his head to bounce off the canvas.

The medical staff was quick to assist Day, who was eventually carried out on a stretcher and rushed to a nearby hospital. According to this report, Day suffered several seizures en route to the hospital before he was put in a medically-induced coma and undergoing brain surgery. Four days later, day would succumb to his injuries.

Just yesterday (Tues., Oct. 15, 2019) Conwell took to social media to pen a highly-emotional letter to Day.

“Dear Patrick Day. I never meant for this to happen to you. All I ever wanted to do was win. If I could take it all back I would. No one deserves for this to happen to them. I replay the fight over and over in my head thinking what if this never happened and why did it happen to you. I can’t stop thinking about it myself. I prayed for you so many times and shedded so many tears because I couldn’t even imagine how my family and friends would feel,” he wrote.

“I see you everywhere I go and all I hear is wonderful things about you. I thought about quitting boxing but I know that’s not what you would want. I know that you were a fighter at heart so I decided not to but to fight and win a world title because that’s what you wanted and that’s what I want so I’ll use you as motivation every day and make sure I always leave it all in the ring every time. #ChampPatrickDay. With Compassion, Charles Conwell.”

A former Golden Gloves champion and 2012 Olympic alternate, Day (27) amassed a pro record of 17-4-1. We at MMAmania would like to send our deepest and sincere condolences to Patrick’s family and friends.
