Bellator 233 post-event facts: Tyrell Fortune already making a mark in record books

A busy month for Bellator got off to a start on Friday with Bellator 233, which took place at WinStar World Casino & Resort in Thackerville, Okla., with a main card that aired on Paramount and streamed on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.

A middleweight contender emerged in the main event of the card. John Salter (17-4 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) went to the scorecards for the first time in his career, outlasting Costello van Steenis (12-2 MMA, 4-1 BMMA) to take a unanimous decision in a bloody affair.

Betting favorites went 2-2 on the main card.

Betting favorites improved to 12-6 (with two no contests and one draw) in Bellator main events this year.

Total fight time for the four-bout main card was 38:18.

Main card

Salter’s seven victories in Bellator middleweight competition are tied with Rafael Carvalho for second most in divisional history behind Alexander Shlemenko (12).

Salter earned the first decision victory of his career.

Van Steenis has suffered both of his career losses by decision.

Andrew Kapel (14-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) has earned 13 of his 14 career victories by stoppage.

Kapel earned his first knockout victory since Nov. 21, 2015 – a span of 1,448 days (nearly four years) and six fights.
