Faber: Aldo ‘Over-Cutting’ To 135, Won’t End Well

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight champion, Jose Aldo, is making the drop to bantamweight for his next fight after failing to punch his way back into the 145-pound title hunt. The news came as a concern to those in the know, as “Junior” was expected to instead go to lightweight, based on his considerable frame.

Newly-released photos of the rapidly-shrinking Brazilian (see them here) certainly didn’t help his cause and now former opponent, Urijah Faber, is shedding some light on the process, as “The California Kid” also made the drop down to 135 pounds in recent years.

“Aldo, in my opinion, is one of the best fighters to ever grace the sport,” Faber told MMA Junkie. “Seeing him make this weight cut, I know that he’s mentally tough enough to do it. I don’t know if it’s going to be the best for his body. I remember the first time I did (135), I was over-cutting because I was nervous about how it was going to go, so I was getting too small too early. I think he might be doing the same thing. I don’t think it’s going to be good for him. Hopefully he’s able to perform to the Aldo that we all know, but only time will tell on that one.”

Following a five-round drubbing at the hands of Aldo, Faber dropped to the bantamweight division for his final World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) appearance back in late 2010, smashing and trashing Takeya Mizugaki by way of first-round submission.
