Kamaru Usman wants to fight Georges St-Pierre to cement his UFC legacy

LAS VEGAS – Kamaru Usman is chasing G.O.A.T. status in the welterweight division.

UFC welterweight champ Usman made his first successful title defense at UFC 245 when he outlasted Colby Covington in an instant classic. He got a TKO finish with a little less than a minute left in the fight.

When asked about a potential matchup with the consensus greatest welterweight of all time, Georges St-Pierre, Usman (16-1 MMA, 11-0 UFC) said he’d definitely be interested.

“That’s the fight that, to be honest, really gets me up, that gets me motivated, that intrigues me,” Usman said Thursday. “Of course, I do my job when I sign on the dotted line to fight anybody. I’m going to go in there and do my job. But a fight with someone like Georges is a fight that makes me think, that wakes me up, because Georges is someone that’s special to the mixed martial arts world.”

Former two-division champ St-Pierre (26-2 MMA, 20-2 UFC) holds the record for the most 170-pound title defenses at nine and avenged his only two career losses to Matt Hughes and Matt Serra. His resume is undeniable, and Usman knows if he can beat a legend like St-Pierre, it would help his case and aspirations of one day becoming the greatest welterweight to ever do it.

“A guy that actually has the record right now, currently that I’m chasing – and what better way to cement my legacy by actually going out there and breaking that record, against that man, because he has hasn’t really lost,” Usman said. “He walked away, and he’s still in tip-top shape. He can come back, as he showed a couple of years ago with (Michael) Bisping. He can come back and still get it done. So that is a fight that intrigues me a lot, and that is something that I am looking forward to.”
