[Official] Regional Rundown – February 2020 Edition – Jared “Legacy” Mazurek

This month is a double header as we spotlight current AFC Bantamweight Jared “Legacy” Mazurek! A member of the team was able to reach out and interview/invite him to the sub. He will be joining us (hopefully) around 7pm est to interact with you guys, so post questions!

Spotlight on Jared “Legacy” Mazurek

Pro Record – 10-1

“I grew up in Nikiski, Alaska. It’s on the road system, so can’t quite be considered rural by Alaska standards. Most people in the US would think I grew up in the middle of nowhere though.”

says Alaska Fighting Championship Bantamweight Jared Mazurek. Jared currently holds a record of 10 wins with a single loss and 8 of his wins coming by way of submission.

“Submissions aren’t really a focus in my training. I’m just a firm believer that Jiu-Jitsu is the closest thing to superpowers on this planet.”

Mazurek will be fighting in the main event on the upcoming Alaska FC 157 card – Wednesday, February 26th. Jared trains and co-owns a gym in Anchorage, Alaska called “Legacy Jiu-Jitsu”.

“Back in 2016 myself and 2 of my closest friends decided to open the gym, with our focus on community and personal growth. Everyone has seen gyms fold that are focused on being a ‘business’. We wanted something that would stand the test of time and always be there for people who so desperately need a positive influence in their life. Hence, Legacy Jiu-Jitsu.”

“A lot of people don’t realize Alaska is a combat sports state. There are currently 5-6 active promotions in the state, with others that come and go all the time. One promotion, Thursday Night Fights, has been active for over 30 years. We don’t get a lot of local recognition or support even though we produce athletes that compete at the highest level. With names such as Jared Cannonier, Lauren Murphy, and Elisabeth Clay. A lot of fighters/athletes up here feel like they’ll never get noticed unless they go to a “big name” gym where they can be respected on the national level.”

Mazurek’s opponent comes February 26th will be Victor Rodriguez who holds a record of 5-2.

“I don’t have a prediction for the upcoming fight other than winning. He’s a well-rounded opponent who is always improving his skills. People often have a punchers chance. If I’m able to use my jiu-jitsu and grappling to turn the fight into a beat down instead I’ll take that opportunity every time. It’s a marathon, not a sprint”.

Mazurek made the choice to jump straight into the pro circuit saying “I never fought as an amateur in MMA. I figured if I had a risk of being hit in the head I better make it count.” So far, Mazurek has held the Bantamweight Title for AK Tuesday Night Fights (now called Alaska Combat Entertainment) as well as the Bantamweight Title for Alaska Fighting Championship. “I never lost the title, but they re-branded and I believe it’s technically vacant now.”

Aside from training Mazurek emphasizes the value of a solid diet.

“I don’t use pills or powders. Whole, raw, natural food, as local as I can find it. It’s the only thing in the fight game that you have 100% control over. I can’t control the referee, my opponent, or even my own performance on the day of the fight. We train hoping to perform to the best of our ability, but even that is an unknown. However, I do have complete control over what I put in my body.”

Mazurek also juggles training with a day job. He has worked in video production and photography for most of his adult life.

“I’ve been working in News for 11 years or so as a photojournalist. I’m currently a photojournalist for KTVA in Anchorage Alaska. I train as much as a can, but I do have a very busy life outside of the gym.”

Please anticipate Jared’s arrival later around 7 pm EST!

Errata: Jared has reached out to us and stated that “Legacy” and “AK-47” are the names of his and his opponent’s gym, respectively. The fact that we have christened him a new nickname has not slipped on the minds of the mod team. 😂
