Israel Adesanya apologizes after being called out for crumbling ‘Twin Towers’ 9/11 remark
Israel Adesanya has never been one to hold his tongue, but this time, it seems to have come back to bite him.
After ripping on Yoel Romero at their UFC 248 kick-off press conference, Adesanya was taken to task by another middleweight contender Paulo Costa. Adesanya’s trash talk with Romero involved an off-hand comment referencing the crumbling of the Twin Towers in New York City, which fell to the ground during the 9/11 attack in 2001.
“He’s human like anyone else, and everyone likes to make this myth about, ‘Oh, he’s steel, like kicking steel,’ or you hit him and he doesn’t fall,” Adesanya said during the press conference, referencing Romero’s reputation as indestructible. “I’ll touch him enough times. I’ll touch him enough times and eventually he’ll crumble like the Twin Towers.”
Though the attack happened on American soil, 9/11 united people from around the globe like never before. Costa, who hails from Brazil, didn’t take kindly to Adesanya’s comment and called him to the carpet.
“Adesanya, you are a disgusting piece of s**t. How dare you make a joke disrespecting the thousands who died and the heroic firefighters and police. I will really kill you, dirty kiwi.”
Costa, of course, could be marked for his kiwi comment, but Adesanya didn’t focus on that, he posted to his Instagram stories, apologizing for what he eventually realized was an insensitive comment that he would have done better to have not made.
“The comment in the last story sums up how I feel about the situation,” Adesanya said, referencing a fan’s comment that noted Adesanya went too far and probably made the comment without much thought given to the consequences.
“I never made a joke about people dying or made light of the tragic event that was 9/11. I was simply rambling and my brain worked faster than my mouth in a moment to (choose) the wrong euphemism. You speak on the mic enough times and you’re bound to miss the mark with some bars. I did on this one and for that I’m sorry. I’ll be more careful in (the) future with my words.”
