Chris San Jose extended his winning streak at CageSport 60, ready for the next level

Coming off an undefeated 2019, bantamweight Chris San Jose was looking to carry his momentum into 2020 in his first bout of the year in a title defense versus Timothy Lewis at CageSport 60 on February 22.

Though San Jose had a bit of a hitch early in the bout, he was able to overcome the issue and have a successful title defense and pick up his third win in a row overall.

“It went well,” San Jose told MMAWeekly.com. “I got the unanimous decision. I won all five rounds.

“Towards the end of the first round I actually injured my knee, so I was fighting with some limited mobility the next four rounds. But all in all I felt really good. We got the win, so that’s what’s important.”

In his third year as a pro, San Jose feels he’s made the right changes in his game as to add on to what he’s able to do instead of having to reinvent himself constantly.

“I think it’s just an accumulation of years of putting things together,” said San Jose. “My strength and conditioning is peaking at the right moment, and all the skills in all the arts blending together.

“Probably one of my biggest changes has been more aggression and more pressure. I’ve been a natural counter-fighter, so one of the biggest things I’ve changed the last few years, putting pressure on guys and putting them in a bad position.”

While San Jose’s goal for 2020 is to make it to the next level, he lets his team do the legwork for that while he focuses on readying himself for fights and not much beyond that.

“I generally go one fight at a time,” said San Jose. “My (recent) focus was February 22 and not much past that.

“There’s obviously plans, like wanting to get to the next show kind of thing, but I try to let my managers and coaches think of the future stuff. I think on the opponent and the job I have to do that day. When it’s over, I can start using my energy to think about the future and what’s next.”
