American Top Team remains closed to the general public despite Florida’s re-opening from COVID-19 lockdown

American Top Team will wait a little longer before it resumes operations at a full scale.

The world-renowned MMA gym in Coconut Creek, Fla. remains closed to the general public despite Florida granting commercial gyms and fitness centers permission to resume activity with certain restrictions and precautions. American Top Team founder and owner Dan Lambert informed MMA Junkie on Tuesday afternoon.

The reopening of commercial gyms is one of many efforts implemented to re-open the state’s economy after going in lockdown due to COVID-19 concerns.

In Broward County’s emergency order – effective as of Tuesday, May 26 – commercial gyms and fitness centers, including but not limited to: dance studios, martial arts studios, yoga studios, spinning studios, personal training services, and similar establishments, are now allowed to open to the public. These establishments must comply with all applicable requirements listed on the emergency order.

Florida went on lockdown on April 1, but Broward County had shut down prior on March 22.

American Top Team never closed 100 percent, even during the lockdown, as it remained opened to a very limited number of fighters and staff. They were able to do this as they also serve as living quarters for many athletes.

Additionally, professional fighters who had UFC fights booked were allowed to train with certain restrictions due to Florida including athlete-support under essential services exemptions. This allowed the UFC and WWE to host events in the state while in lockdown.

The gym will continue to be open for professional athletes but will hold off on opening to the public for at least a month, as they see how the re-opening goes under this unprecedented pandemic.

Florida has had 50,127 cases of coronavirus, including 879 new cases on Monday. A total of 6,799 of the cases have come out of Broward County.

American Top Team is home of Jorge Masvidal, Amanda Nunes, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Dustin Poirier, Yoel Romero, and many more high-level fighters.
