One week after UFC’s latest women’s Featherweight title fight, the women’s Flyweights take center stage this weekend (Sat., June 13, 2020) when Jessica Eye squares off with Cynthia Calvillo in UFC on ESPN 10’s main event inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Also in store for the nonexistent attendees are a Middleweight tussle pitting Marvin Vettori against kickboxing vet Karl Roberson, a wild Bantamweight clash between Merab Dvalishvili and Ray Borg, and Featherweight up-and-comer Charles Jourdain looking to build off a career-best knockout of Doo Ho Choi against Andre Fili.
Itching for a haircut once things open back up? Here’s how to pay for it:
What Went Wrong at UFC 250?
I screwed up. There wasn’t a dodgy decision to pin the blame on or a moral victory to cling to. I made a number of poor picks and I’m sorry.
I’m not afraid of being publicly wrong. If I was, I’d be giving advice for a far less volatile sport and not keeping a running tally. I am, however, terrified of someone following my advice straight off of a cliff. All I can say is that I’m genuinely trying to help.
The good news? We ain’t bankrupt yet. Still, it’s time for the rebound.
UFC On ESPN 10 Odds For The Undercard:
Mariya Agapova (-225) vs. Hannah Cifers (+175)
Kevin Aguilar (-170) vs. Charles Rosa (+150)
Julia Avila (-485) vs. Gina Mazany (+385)
Zarrukh Adashev (N/A) vs. Tyson Nam (N/A)
Jordan Griffin (-165) vs. Darrick Minner (+145)
Anthony Ivy (-195) vs. Christian Aguilera (+160)
Thoughts: I like the looks of UFC newcomers Anthony Ivy and Mariya Agapova, as well as the heavily-favored Julia Avila.
Though Ivy has weak stand up and an infuriating tendency to abandon dominant positions in pursuit of high-risk submissions, he’s got such a substantial advantage over Christian Aguilera on the ground that he’s hard to pass up. Even better, he’s so focused on tying up and scoring takedowns that the heavy-handed “Beast” will have very little time to bring his punches to bear before having to fight off double-legs. The risk here comes from Ivy potentially failing to execute, but he remains a solid investment.
Avila looks like a safe way to beef up your parlays because she holds every conceivable advantage over the returning Gina Mazany, and Agapova is so much bigger than Hannah Cifers that her sheer power and athleticism can compensate for her technical deficiencies.
UFC On ESPN 10 Odds For The Main Card:
Jessica Eye (-120) vs. Cynthia Calvillo (EVEN)
Marvin Vettori (-220) vs. Karl Roberson (+180)
Merab Dvalishvili (-400) vs. Ray Borg (+325)
Andre Fili (-225) vs. Charles Jourdain (+185)
Jordan Espinosa (-165) vs. Mark De La Rosa (+145)
Thoughts: Cynthia Calvillo is a mighty tempting underdog among a group of mighty tempting favorites. Marvin Vettori, Andre Fili and Jordan Espinosa are worth your time as well.
Calvillo may be coming up in weight, but she’s got the one thing that has vexed Jessica Eye since the start of her UFC run: a top-notch ground game. Though Calvillo can get complacent in the stand up, her wrestling and top control look like more than Eye can handle, and unlike Viviane Araujo, Calvillo is unlikely to slow down after a fast start. Eye’s lack of stopping power and historical issues on the mat look like liabilities in a five-round fight, so bank on Calvillo to make a splash in her Flyweight debut.
I recommended a bet on Vettori the last time he and Karl Roberson were booked to fight and my reasoning hasn’t changed. Vettori has the durability and aggression to power through “Baby K’s” kickboxing offense, plus the wrestling skills to exploit Roberson’s shaky takedown defense the way Wellington Turman and Glover Teixeira did. “The Italian Dream” figures to come up big.
As impressive as Charles Jourdain’s comeback knockout of Doo Ho Choi was, Andre Fili is a serious problem for him. “Touchy” is taller, far rangier, and highly adept with his takedowns. He’s not going to give “Air” Jourdain the close-quarters brawl he craves and his wrestling looks like more than Jourdain, who’s long struggled to keep fights standing, can deal with.
Espinosa’s a risky play, I’ll admit. That’s because despite his obvious grappling skills, he’s been caught and submitted twice in a row. That said, De La Rosa has dropped three straight and faces significant disadvantages in striking and wrestling. Twice bitten, thrice shy, but Espinosa’s has the skills to win this with relative ease.
UFC On ESPN 10 Best Bets:
- Parlay — Anthony Ivy and Andre Fili: Bet $60 to make $71.40
- Parlay — Julia Avila and Cynthia Calvillo: Bet $50 to make $90.50
- Parlay — Mariya Agapova and Marvin Vettori: Bet $30 to make $33
- Parlay — Julia Avila and Jordan Espinosa: Bet $35 to make $32.71
There’s serious potential for wild brawls and brutal finishes under the surface; let’s see what bubbles up. See you Saturday, Maniacs.
