Poirier Still Interested In ‘Exciting’ Diaz Fight

Uncrowned king of the lightweight division Dustin Poirier, who boasts technical knockout victories over the likes of Conor McGregor and Justin Gaethje, among others, is waiting patiently for the promotion to strip Khabib Nurmagomedov of the 155-pound strap.

“The Eagle” retired following his “Highlight” win last October.

So until UFC matchmakers can set him up with a potential title fight, presumably against streaking lightweight contender Charles Oliveira, “The Diamond” isn’t ruling anyone out, including longtime nemesis and part-time welterweight Nate Diaz.

“It is exciting, it is fun,” Poirier told ESPN (transcribed by Cole Shelton). “Those are the kind of fights I want to be part of. Fights that are exciting to me and that I’m motivated to get up and bust my ass every day. I think the fans would be in for a great fight if that one happens. Does it make sense in the lightweight division? No. Does it make sense where I am at, standing in the door front of a title shot? No. But, it is a fun fight and this is entertainment and this is fighting.”

Poirier was supposed to throw hands with the Stockton slapper back in 2018 and revealed the “crazy” negotiations that made Diaz “hard to deal with.” Not long after “The Diamond” upset McGregor at UFC 257, Diaz was back on social media making idle threats.

Don’t hold your breath.

As Poirier alluded to above, there are more important (and more logical) matchups in the lightweight division. Michael Chandler is now ranked in the Top 5 and McGregor is currently harassing UFC for a “Diamond” do-over — and that’s without mentioning Oliveira.

Besides, If Diaz is going to fight I’d much rather see this.
