Anderson Ready For Free Agency After UFC Contract Expires

Megan Anderson is officially a free agent following her loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 259 and the Australian veteran is eager to get back in action.

Anderson, who made her UFC debut back in 2018, had her six-fight contract with the promotion expire last weekend at UFC 259. It was Anderson’s final chance to capture UFC gold as a member of the women’s featherweight division, but she came up considerably short.

Despite possessing a worthy reach and size advantage, Anderson was unable to defend Nunes’ offensive advancements from the opening bell. “Lioness” moved in, clipped Anderson with punches, and finished her via submission in just over two minutes, proving that she is best female fighter in the world today.

Anderson enjoyed the opportunity to fight a legend in her first ever UFC title shot, but the loss is crippling for her UFC future. She’s now 3-3 in the promotion, without a current contract, and can’t exactly fight her way back into title contention since UFC has no real women’s featherweight division in place.

Instead, Anderson is left to lick her wounds and determine the next step in her MMA career. She released the following message to Instagram earlier this week:

In light of the news that came out yesterday, I wanted to address my fans, and say thank you for all the love and support you have sent me over the past few days.

Saturday night was fight number 6 of my 6 fight deal with the UFC. I had an amazing run with the promotion, culminating in a UFC world title fight. If you know me and the journey I have been on, just to reach the pinnacle of the sport is something I am incredibly proud of. I want to thank my team and everyone at the UFC for the past 3 years, it’s been amazing to perform for my fans on such a big stage.

I’m looking to rest up and heal from my injuries before I decide what is next for my MMA career. Regardless of what the UFC decides to do with the Women’s 145 division, there are plenty of opportunities for me across the world to continue to do what I love.

Anderson, 31, remains one of the best women’s featherweight fighters in the world today even after getting dismantled by Nunes in two minutes. There are plenty of promotions that would love to sign the towering striker so Anderson shouldn’t have too much trouble finding work. That’s if UFC doesn’t decide to keep her around.
