Relive James Krause’s stirring pep talk that inspired Grant Dawson to last-second KO at UFC on ESPN 21

James Krause wasn’t about to let Grant Dawson’s biggest opportunity to date slip away.

Head coach of Glory MMA and active UFC welterweight Krause was the lead man in Dawson’s corner for his fight against undefeated Leonardo Santos this past weekend at UFC on ESPN 21, in what proved to be a back-and-forth battle.

At the end of Round 2, Krause didn’t sugar-coat things for Dawson, who was having a hard time implementing his game plan of taking Santos down. Though two of the judges had Dawson ahead heading into Round 3, the first two rounds were competitive and difficult to score.

A fired-up Krause let Dawson know that he needed to show a sense of urgency by getting the finish and that’s exactly what the Contender Series standout did. Dawson was finally able to get Santos down to the mat, which eventually led to an incredible ground-and-pound knockout with just one second remaining in the fight.

Dawson’s win gave him his fifth straight victory in the UFC, and extended his winning streak to eight. After a successful lightweight debut, he proceeded to call out veteran Clay Guida as he looks to kickstart his run at 155 pounds.
