Anatomy of a Fighter: Behind the scenes with ONE on TNT 1’s Eddie Alvarez

After the longest layoff of his career, a “King” finally returns Wednesday.

Eddie Alvarez (30-7), “The Underground King,” is set to take on recent welterweight title challenger Iuri Lapicus (14-1) in ONE Championship’s Wednesday card on TNT, which is the first of four straight shows on the cable network. Alvarez and Lapicus meet in the co-main event, and the winner could find himself next in line for a title shot.

That’s pretty much what Alvarez came to ONE to do: win a title in yet another organization. He has belts in the UFC, Bellator and more already on his resume. Adding another major promotion in the latter part of his career might be icing on the cake.

Alvarez hasn’t fought since August 2019, so the return represents the longest layoff of his career – which stretches back more than 17 years. The downtime wasn’t his fault – COVID-19 canceled a planned fight in 2020. But now the Philadelphia native will try to punch a ticket to a title shot with champ Christian Lee against Lapicus.

Ahead of the fight, ONE Championship gives us an inside look at not only Alvarez’s preparation for the fight, but his life outside the cage, as well.
