UFC free fight: Cody Garbrandt scores buzzer-beater knockout over Raphael Assuncao

With his back against the wall, Cody Garbrandt rebounded in emphatic fashion.

Looking to snap a three-fight losing skid, Garbrandt faced perennial contender Raphael Assuncao at UFC 250, which took place this past June at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

It was a composed performance from Garbrandt, who paid for an overzealous approach in his previous three stoppage losses. The former UFC bantamweight champion looked to punish Assuncao’s lead leg early, tagging him with a few blitzing combinations.

A scramble on the ground opened up the second frame, with Garbrandt landing a big head kick off the break. Garbrandt continued to mix things up with kicks to the leg and body of Assuncao, until he tagged him with a clean right which briefly dropped him. With seconds winding down in Round 2, Garbrandt landed a massive right hook which knocked Assuncao out at the buzzer.

Garbrandt (12-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) returns to action Saturday when he takes on Rob Font (18-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) in the main event of UFC Fight Night 188, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

Before he faces Font, relive Garbrandt’s finish of Assuncao in the video above.
