Hannah Guy thought she ‘did have an advantage’ vs. Valerie Loureda, not surprised by Bellator 259 win

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Hannah Guy had no doubt she’d beat Valerie Loureda despite being a big underdog.

Guy (3-1 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) upset Loureda (3-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) at Bellator 259, defeating the popular previously unbeaten flyweight by unanimous decision.

Though she had to battle through some early adversity when she was knocked down in Round 1, Guy used her grappling to mostly control the rest of the fight.

“I knew win or lose it was an amazing opportunity, but I thought I did have an advantage honestly,” Guy said at the Bellator 259 post-fight news conference. “I try to be humble, but I’m trying to be honest too. I felt like I was gonna win. I felt like I was a strong enough grappler, wrestler where I could get the fight wherever I wanted it to be.”

She continued, “I did feel like I’ve grown in my striking so much, but it’s always had to catch up to my grappling. So I knew at the end of the day, I can always depend on that. I didn’t just want to depend on that, I wanted to get some good shots in, and I actually felt like I landed pretty well a few times, and I kinda saw – it was weird because in this fight, I felt like I could see when the punches were coming, and I was able to defend a little bit better than in the past, so in that way I think my striking has really grown. I’m just really proud of myself either way.”

With so much momentum on her side after the big win, Guy hopes her future lies with Bellator.

“If they want to keep me, I’m totally down,” Guy said. “I love this sport. I love fighting. (They) have treated me really well, so I hope to come back and fight again.”
