Brendan Schaub details harrowing scene of rescuing kids from car wreck that killed mother

On Tuesday’s episode of “The Fighter and The Kid,” former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub shared a harrowing story of how he rescued three kids from a horrific car wreck last week in the Los Angeles area.

According to ABC 7, a mother of four was killed on the freeway in Encino after a wrong-way crash that allegedly was intentionally caused by the victim’s husband, who drove a Lincoln SUV into oncoming traffic before crashing into a tractor trailer while the couple’s four children, all under age 9, were in the vehicle.

The children suffered only minor injuries. The mother, identified as 26-year-old Aimee Garcia, died in the wreckage. The husband, 31-year-old Cesar Iban Torres, allegedly tried to flee the scene, but he was arrested on the freeway after California Highway Patrol said he fought with officers.

Schaub said he was driving out to dinner with his girlfriend when they saw the wrecked vehicle ahead of them, with one of the kids sitting on top of the SUV waving for help. Schaub said he stopped and was the first person on the scene, along with another man. He said “debris was everywhere” with a heavy amount of gasoline leaking from the 18-wheeler.

“I’m like, ‘God, this isn’t safe,’” Schaub said. “In my head I’m like, ‘F*ck, I have kids, man. I can’t go out like this.’ But I’m thinking of those kids (in the SUV).”

Schaub said he had to smash an already broken window in order to access two kids stuck in the SUV. He described a heartbreaking moment as he pulled one of the kids out.

“In the front is a lady who passed away – brain matter everywhere, blood everywhere. And the kid’s going, ‘Mama, mama!’ I go, ‘Bubba, look at me. Look at me, don’t look over there,’” Schaub said. “He was so young, it would’ve completely f*cked him up. I look at the guy and go, ‘Get a blanket, cover his mom.’

“A lady walks up. I don’t know where she came from. I go, ‘Take these two kids and run that way, run away from the car.’ She goes, ‘Well, I think it’s better to go that way.’ And I go, ‘Don’t go that way. Because the mom’s there, and they can’t see the mom. Go that way.’”

Schaub said once the kids were removed safely from the vehicle, he went back to his car and left.

Torres, the husband and driver of the car, was arrested and charged with murder, according to TMZ. Garcia’s brother, Juan Zavala, told ABC 7 how he received a disturbing phone call from Torres before the crash.

“And he said God talked to him, and he said he has to give his family to God,” Zavala said of Torres. “And I’m like, ‘No, what are you talking about? Come back.’”
