Eddie Alvarez raring to fight again after ONE Championship deal with Prime Video

To say Eddie Alvarez’s tenure with ONE Championship has been disappointing wouldn’t be a stretch. After all, the former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion has just one win in four appearances since his promotional debut in March 2019.

Alvarez, 38, has been inactive since April 2021, which was a weird month for him. Against Iuri Lapicus, Alvarez was disqualified after just 62 seconds for throwing punches to the back of the head in a fight he was dominating; the fight was later ruled a no contest after Alvarez appealed. Three weeks later, Alvarez was back in action but lost a unanimous decision against Ok Rae Yoon in an epic brawl.

Fifteen months later, Alvarez (30-8) is still waiting for his next fight. The good news is that ONE Championship’s deal with Prime Video should speed up Alvarez’s next booking given his all-action style that would be perfect for the promotion to put in front of a U.S. audience.

“It’s really important for me to put the fights on that I want to put on, help them build that footprint, and kind of enter the United States strong,” Alvarez said during a recent news conference in Los Angeles. “Where they’ve come in the last three, four years from where we started, it’s huge for me. For the company to continue to grow and be able to fight in front of a such a large audience is super important.”

Although Alvarez said his goal “has always been the triple crown,” he was also clear about what matters most to him.

“The goal is always the same, to go out and put on exciting fights,” Alvarez said. “When I entered this sport, I never really had a plan. I think plans are for schemers. So I think I just go about each fight one at a time and put on the best show I can.”
