Will we ever get Benavidez vs. Alvarez?

Last night (Sat., June 15, 2024), in the co-main event of Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin, David Benavidez cruised to a unanimous decision win over Oleksandr Gvozdyk to win the vacant WBC interim light heavyweight title from inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Benavidez (29-0) moved up to light heavyweight after failing to get a fight with boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez. However, the “Mexican monster” isn’t giving up on the fight just yet.

During his post-fight press conference, Benavidez seemed to taunt Alvarez yet again.

“You guys keep asking me about Canelo. I do not care about Canelo,” Benavidez told reporters. “I want to make my own lane, that’s why I came up to 175 lbs. I’ve been trying to get that fight with Canelo for a long, long time, and as you can see, I have the star power now. People love the way I fight, and they interact with me very well. That would be a very big fight. I think everyone wins – the world of boxing wins, and the fans win. It’s a fight that we have to get going on. If he really believes he is the best in the world, then come beat me and shut me up…I’m going to keep showing you why I’m the Mexican monster.”

Canelo has shut down the Benavidez fight for years, claiming that he brings nothing to the table and wants to get paid handsomely (125 million). However, it is the fight to make, and everyone knows it.

With Canelo most likely returning to action for Mexican Independence Day in Sept., hopefully Benavidez gets his wish.
