Undefeated boxing stars clash tonight, Saturday, June 15th, 2024 as Tank Davis looks to defund his WBA lightweight title against Ghost Martin

Another boxing match that is both cool and important goes down tonight, Saturday, June 15th, 2024, live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, starting at 9PM Eastern only on Amazon Prime PPV. We’ve got undefeated Frank “Ghost” Martin taking on undefeated Gervonta “Tank” Davis. A combined 47-0 with 39 knockouts between them. Rangy southpaw versus heavy-handed southpaw. Someone’s 0 has got to go!

We all know that Martin doesn’t “move the needle” the same way that a Shakur Stevenson or Devin Haney match might. That said, he’s a legitimate top-5 lightweight that’s won in a number of ways, with his last two fights being a bell-to-bell domination of Michael Rivera followed by having to dig deep with a 12th-round knockdown to ensure a win over Artem Harutyunyan. Some props should be given to Davis for not holding out for a big money fight, but instead letting a less well-known, but still deserving name get a crack at a belt.

Davis, on the other hand, is arguably the face of American boxing right now, despite his outside-the-ring controversies. He and Terrence Crawford are the two American men that make most peoples’ pound-for-pound list and with good reason — they’re supremely gifted boxers.

Davis’ recent string of fights has been an absolute who’s who of Mexican-American, Central American and South American lightweights. Every top contender from Mexico, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Cuba and Argentina has run into the Tank these past six years, and aside from Isaac Cruz, every one of them has exited with a KO loss on their record. Tank’s ridiculous 93% finishing rate is one of the reasons he’s as popular as he is.

In the co-main event, we’ve got a fighter that is somehow second billing, despite being an undefeated champion himself, in David Benavidez. The WBC super middleweight interim champion is — at least temporarily — giving up on the division, as he has been unable to secure a fight with Canelo Alvarez, and is instead moving up to light heavyweight to fight Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the interim WBC light heavyweight title.

All in all, a very solid card coming out of Premier Boxing Champions, as there are four belts on the line tonight, starting at 9PM Eastern, live on Amazon Prime PPV.

Round 1: Davis in black, Martin in lavender. Martin tarts pumping out the jab. Slow here in the beginning, but that’s normal from Davis. There’s a nice left by Martin. Almost no output from Davis.

10-9 Martin

Round 2: Davis on the front foot, but not throwing anything, keeping the gloves high and tight. Martin happy to pop in from time to time, putting his glove on Davis’ and using his nice footwork. Davis gets to the body. Martin with a right, eats a counter to the gut. Martin 1-2.

10-9 Martin, 20-18 Martin

Round 3: Davis looks like the right side of his face is a bit marred up already, but that could just be the lighting. There’s a left by Davis. Tank backs up Martin into the corner, he’s being wary – laces in a right, but eats a counter left. 1-2 by Martin, then a 1-2-3. Martin with a popping jab. Davis with a right.

10-9 Martin, 30-27 Martin

Round 4: Double jab from Martin. Nice left to the breadbasket by Davis. Davis just misses an uppercut, and Martin responds by picking up Davis’ lead leg in a clinch. Wrong sport, Frank! Martin eats another body shot. Left by Martin, one by Davis. A good one there from the champ.

10-9 Davis, 39-37 Martin

Round 5: Davis looking like he’s not really concerned about what Martin is landing, but he’s still getting hit pretty well. Davis powering forward on the front foot, pressuring constantly. Both men landing sporadically. Uppercut, right hook by Davis. Martin fires back with a 1-2. Davis pressures him into the ropes and gets in a couple.

David Benavidez vs. Oleksandr Gvozdyk, WBC interim light heavyweight title:

Round 1: Benavidez in black, Gvozdyk in gray. Benavidez taking center-ring early. Gvozdyk with a nice shifting jab. Benavidez to the body. Most of Benavidez’ lands have been to the torso so far, as he’s banking for later. Gvozdyk has mostly jabbed and moved all round. There’s a jab from David. 1-2 by Gvozdyk.

Close round, but I’ll go 10-9 Benavidez

Round 2: Gvozdyk popping out his jab again, gets countered this time after a couple. There’s a right by Gvozdyk. Halfway through the round, nice right lands for Benavidez. Combo by Benavidez, Gvozdyk responds with a 1-2. Benavidez connecting with nearly every body punch he throws, from either hand.

10-9 Benavidez, 20-18 Benavidez

Round 3: Gvozdyk continuing with his pattern of jabs and mostly straight rights. Not full power ones, but very technical, trying to outland the Mexican-American. Benavidez whiffs on a big uppercut. Lands two rights a little bit later. Benavidez still working on the range when going upstairs, but nearly perfect when going to the body. There’s a flurry by Benavidez at the end of the round – right, left, uppercut.

10-9 Benavidez, 30-27 Benavidez

Round 4: Gvozdyk finally walking forward now, lands a right hand. Each fighter going back to their gameplan – Gvozdyk peppering and moving, Benavidez walking down, ripping to the body, trying to get upstairs when it shows up. There’s a nice body-head combo by Benavidez. Gvozdyk lands, Benavidez counters back hard. Now David landing upstairs with regularity and power.

10-9 Benavidez, 40-36 Benavidez

Round 5: Gvozdyk doing a decent job keeping the traffic from being entirely one-way, but it doesn’t look like anything he lands is fazing Benavidez. Gvozdyk with a right-left. Now Benavidez with that same combo back, but a thudding sound when they hit. Benavidez with a blitz to the body. Gvozdyk eating everything so far and trying, but his lighter shots aren’t wearing down his opponent. 6-piece in rapid succession by Benavidez at the end of the round.

10-9 Benavidez, 50-45 Benavidez

Round 6: The most common punches repeat themselves: jab by Gvozdyk, body shot by Benavidez. Gvozdyk with a flurry, but seems to be mostly blocked. Oh, nice left and uppercut by Benavidez. Gvozdyk eating all the leather, and he hasn’t been wobbled yet, but this is just not going his way at all so far. There’s a nice left-right, however.

10-9 Benavidez, 60-54 Benavidez

Round 7: Two nice jabs by Gvozdyk. Slightly slower pace to this round so far, as Benavidez’ output is waning a little. He’s still landing well to the body. Gvozdyk hits a right. Benavidez with a great right-uppercut-right combo. David maybe took a bit of this round off, but he landed well near the end.

10-9 Gvozdyk, 69-64 Benavidez

Round 8: Again, a bit of a slow start for Benavidez here. Gvozdyk still being technical, and I wonder what his corner is telling him to try and change the narrative here. Benavidez body-head. Gvozdyk pops in the right, then a double jab. Heavy hook for Benavidez. Oleksandr gets in a right.

10-9 Benavidez, 79-73 Benavidez

Round 9: These last few rounds have been closer than the earlier ones, and Benavidez looks like he’s settled in a bit. Maybe he realizes that Gvozdyk isn’t going down, despite being hit with most of the appliances in the kitchen. Gvozdyk backs up Benavidez, lands a clean left. Back to the body for Benavidez. Nice counter right hand by Gvozdyk.

10-9 Gvozdyk, 88-83 Benavidez

Round 10: They land simultaneously, but again Benavidez landing the heavier punches again here. This time, it’s body-head again. Back to the jab well for Gvozdyk. Left by Benavidez, now a right. Benavidez moving forward, as he has most of the night and ripping the ribs.

10-9 Benavidez, 98-92 Benavidez

Round 11: Gvozdyk is countering as best as he can, but he’s not able to really stop the downhill momentum from Benavidez. Both men land good. Benavidez’s footwork gets a bit sloppy and Gvozdyk counters him with a good right. And a left a few seconds later. Nice left-right by Benavidez near the bell.

10-9 Benavidez, 108-101 Benavidez

Round 12: Gvozdyk still not sitting down on anything heavy, just content to make it to the bell and hope for judges shenanigans. Benavidez kind of taking it easy here for some reason, perhaps his gas tank is on E. Benavidez not throwing much now, letting Gvozdyk pop in punches in ones and twos. There’s a couple lefts by Benavidez. Gvozdyk finishes the round backing Benavidez up and flurrying to the body and head.
