Off Guard: Aaron Pico believes he’ll fight for Bellator title when time is right

LOS ANGELES – Super prospect Aaron Pico has seen his momentum come to a halt, and now he looks to build himself back up slowly but surely.

Speaking to MMA Junkie during Dominance MMA media day at the Tyson Ranch, Pico (4-3 MMA, 4-3 BMMA) admits he might have rushed things early in his career.

“I really want to fight for a title, but in due time,” Pico said. “Sometimes I’ve rushed a little bit too much, and I’ve taken fights that were a little risky, but yeah that might be the case. Slowly start to build my career back up and who knows? I might be fighting for a title four or five fights from now, but I’m in no rush. I’m in no rush to fight for a title. As of right now, it doesn’t really make sense for me to fight for a title.”

After dropping his professional debut in stunning fashion, the Bellator featherweight started to live up to his potential, scoring four straight first-round knockout victories. On the cusp of taking on top 145-pound contention, Pico suffered back-to-back stoppage losses to Henry Corrales and Adam Borics this year.

He has now taken a step back and will look to turn things around as he trains at Jackson Wink MMA in Albuquerque. Still with title aspirations in the future, he’s in no rush.

All in due time for the 23-year-old Pico.

“I’m young in my career. A lot of people don’t realize when you fight for a title, every fight after that is against the No. 1 guy, No. 1 guy … and I really need to start thinking about health and what makes sense and what doesn’t,” Pico said. “So I’m happy. We’re good with Ali (Abdelaziz), and when the time is right for me to fight for a title, I will. But as of right now, I’m in no rush.”
