UFC on ESPN+ 19 rookie report: Grading the newcomer in Tampa

Miguel Baeza

The undefeated Miguel Baeza is doing all the right things in his arrival to the UFC. The MMA Masters product made his way through Florida’s regional scene to a slot on Dana White’s Contender Series, where an impressive decision win earned him a UFC deal. On Saturday, he debuted in the octagon with a stoppage win.

There is reason to be excited, for sure.

Despite fighting for the UFC for the first time, Baeza looked incredibly composed, patiently looking for opportunities to counter an outmatched opponent he probably assumed was looking to brawl. Baeza remained disciplined despite a few taunts from his foe and ended up using his speed and range to his advantage.

The ensuing contest might not have been a contender for “Fight of the Night,” but it certainly was a nice way for Baeza to step into the UFC, showing quick hands and solid footwork, as well, while even flashing out a solid takedown at the end of the first round.

In the second, Baeza turned to the calf kick – a strike certainly en vogue in the moment, but one he says his coaches have been preaching for years. It was very effective, eventually sending Aldana to the canvas, where Baeza stood over him and used a barrage of punches to end the contest.

In the end, it was a technically sound performance that isn’t likely to invoke fear in the welterweight division, but it certainly proves he’s capable of competing at this level. A more stern test in his next outing could prove more informative.
