Early risers rejoice! Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) hits Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore, this Saturday morning (Oct. 26, 2019) with a clash of elite grapplers at the helm. UFC Fight Night 162’s main event sees Ben Askren — back in action after his disastrous loss to Jorge Masvidal (watch it) — faces indefatigable Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Demian Maia. Also on tap are a pair of Lightweight slugfests, the latest from top Heavyweight prospect Cyril Gane, and a clash of Welterweight knockouts artists to kick off the ESPN+ main card.

What Went Wrong at UFC Boston?

My “throw everything at the wall and see what sticks” strategy almost worked. If just one of Boston Salmon, Gillian Robertson, Jonathan Pearce or Deron Winn had come out victorious, it would have been a tidy profit. As is, the first three all failed to withstand the early onslaught I’d expected them to weather and Winn’s blown weight cut led to an unexpected cardio failure in a winnable fight with Darren Stewart. At least it was only a small loss, a favorable inflection point in my current spiral.

Randa Markos (-160) vs. Ashley Yoder (+130)
Rafael Fiziev (-190) vs. Alex White (+165)
Movsar Evloev (-170) vs. Enrique Barzola (+150)
Sergey Pavlovich (-230) vs. Maurice Greene (+190)
Loma Lookboonmee (-120) vs. Aleksandra Albu (EVEN)
Jeff Hughes (-245) vs. Raphael Pessoa (+205)

Thoughts: Randa Markos, Movsar Evloev and Jeff Hughes are the undercard picks of choice this week.

Ashley Yoder would be 1-4 in the Octagon with proper judging, is out-classed on the feet, and will struggle mightily to score takedowns against a superior wrestler in Markos. The only area where she has an ostensible edge is from top position, which the aforementioned wrestling disparity renders moot. Markos has never lost twice in a row during her Octagon tenure and that pattern’s not changing on Saturday.

I have extremely high hopes for Movsar Evloev, even if he did do his best work at Bantamweight. Enrique Barzola lives and dies by his high-volume takedown assault, which looks doomed to failure against a superior technical grappler. Evloev also hits a fair bit harder and has the cardio to keep up with Barzola, all of which point to a dominant victory for the Russian.

Hughes took everything Todd Duffee could dish out without flinching and was, in my opinion, on his way to outlasting the big man before an unfortunate eye poke. Pessoa has little to offer besides heavy hands, which Hughes already proved he could deal with, and has yet to defeat a single UFC-caliber opponent. Go big on “Lights Out.”

Ben Askren (-185) vs. Demian Maia (+160)
Michael Johnson (-300) vs. Stevie Ray (+250)
Beneil Dariush (-165) vs. Frank Camacho (+145)
Cyril Gane (-350) vs. Don’Tale Mayes (+290)
Muslim Salikhov (-175) vs. Laureano Staropoli (+155)

Thoughts: Beneil Dariush is an absolute steal at -165 and Muslim Salikhov isn’t getting the credit he deserves, either.

Frank Camacho’s only shot at victory against Dariush is an out-of-nowhere one-punch finish. Dariush’s pressure style is far more efficient than Camacho’s brawling and “The Crank’s” jiu-jitsu game won’t do him much good when Dariush is the one dictating where the fight takes place. I’ll admit that Dariush has been a bit fragile in the past, but he did a good job not getting sucked into a brawl against Drew Dober last time out and definitely has the wrestling to bail himself out of any rough situations on the feet.

Laureano Staropoli is a powerful, persistent brawler. Muslim Salikhov is one of the most well-credentialed kickboxers on UFC’s roster, one who dismantled the very dangerous Nordine Taleb with ease last time out. This is an absolute nightmare match up for Staropoli, one that will end in stunning and abrupt fashion.
