‘Baby Slice’ Win Overturned At Bellator 232

Bellator 232: “MacDonald vs. Lima 2” took place last Saturday (Oct. 26, 2019) inside Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The main event featured Douglas Lima beating Rory MacDonald to claim a million dollar prize, a Welterweight Grand Prix title, and recapture the Bellator 170-pound title he lost to MacDonald in their first fight.

A late addition to the main card saw “Baby Slice” Kevin Ferguson Jr. (3-2) face Craig Campbell (3-3) at a catch weight of 160 pounds. Initially it appeared that Ferguson scored a TKO win in just 38 seconds when he dropped elbows on his opponent’s head as he tried to take Ferguson’s leg.

The Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulations (MTDAR) overseeing the event took a second look at blows which John McCarthy had raised concern about on commentary, ultimately overturning the result of the fight to a “no contest.” MTDAR President Mike Mazzulli offered this explanation.

“In the case of the above-referenced bout, upon review of the tape, we have determined that the injury that stopped the bout was the result of an accidental foul; elbows to the back of the head. Since the bout was stopped in the first round of a bout scheduled for three rounds, we have determined that the result of the bout must be changed to ‘no-contest.’”

MMA Fighting was first to report the change and was told by Bellator President Scott Coker that he was “looking into it,” but no further comment from him or either of the fighters involved was offered at the time of publication.
