Not to be overshadowed by last night’s (Sat., Nov. 2, 2019) massive UFC 244 PPV event on ESPN+ from New York City (results HERE), was a light heavyweight boxing match between the great Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) and WBO champion Sergey Kovalev (34-2-1, 29 KOs).

In fact, the main event title fight, which aired live on DAZN, produced something that the “BMF” championship fight at UFC 244 couldn’t: A definitive finish.

Canelo, who was making his light heavyweight debut, looked good from the opening bell. He had to charge through some Kovalev jabs and body shots to score his own points, but the Mexican superstar seemed to have control of the fight. All Alvarez had to do was wait for his window of opportunity to really pour it on “Crusher.”

Canelo’s time to shine came later than expected but the lineal middleweight champion still managed to find a home for his power in the 11th round. After catching Kovalev behind the ears with a whipping left hook, Alvarez set sail a straight right that would have ended any light heavyweight standing in his way. Kovalev dropped to the canvas and his head hung over the bottom ropes, leaving Canelo to stroll off with the TKO stoppage.

This was a spectacular knockout stoppage by one of boxing’s biggest stars and an incredible finish to a combat sports weekend that also saw “The Baddest Motherf—ker” crowned inside Madison Square Garden.
