Usman: GSP The Only Fight That Makes Sense

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, has his pick of the litter at 170 pounds, now that he’s rid himself (and the rest of the division) of Colby Covington, thanks to a technical knockout win at UFC 245 last month in Las Vegas.

But like most other champions before him, Usman (16-1) wants to bag a big-money super fight while his brand is at its most profitable. And with Conor McGregor handling his business at lightweight, there’s perhaps no other fight as big as Georges St-Pierre.

“2020, the only thing that makes sense, I’m right there about to break the record for most consecutive wins [at welterweight] and I’m the champion,” Usman told MMA Fighting. “The guy that holds the record, the guy that’s just above me, is Georges St-Pierre. It’s only right that I break that record on Georges St-Pierre.”

Usman also acknowledged that top welterweight contenders, Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal, are deserving of 170-pound title shots. Tyron Woodley, however, will need a couple of more wins after getting dominated at UFC 235, according to the champ.

While it sounds like an interesting showdown, St-Pierre has been lobbying for a lightweight title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov, who battles Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 later this year in Brooklyn, New York, assuming “The Eagle” prevails in “The Empire State.”

If not, we may have seen the last of the “rich prick.”
