John Kavanagh doesn’t necessarily anticipate Conor McGregor going to war with Donald Cerrone.
McGregor (21-4 MMA, 9-2 UFC) on Saturday will headline UFC 246 against Cerrone (36-13 MMA, 23-10 UFC) in the ESPN+ pay-per-view from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Despite McGregor not competing since his fourth-round submission loss to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018, McGregor’s longtime head coach Kavanagh sees a pretty dominant win coming his fighter’s way.
“I think he’s too slick and too technical,” Kavanagh said in an interview with The Mac Life. “Whether it’s something that happens in the first minute or if it goes the distance, if it goes 25 minutes, I don’t see it being a war. I see it being very one-sided.
“He’s on weight. He’s fitter than I’ve ever seen him. He’s relaxed, he’s happy, he’s calm. It’s really one of those … it’s a cliche, but it could not have gone better.”
With McGregor appearing completely refocused after more than a year away from competition, Kavanagh thinks 2020 will be a very active year for the former two-division UFC champion.
“I have a feeling the fight is going to go a certain way, and I have a feeling he’ll have a certain mindset when it’s over that, if something were to come along in February, he would jump in,” Kavanagh said.
