‘BMF’ Jorge Masvidal sets 3-year timeline: ‘I want to be at the highest level when I walk away’

LAS VEGAS – Jorge Masvidal is not looking to drag his career out.

Currently enjoying the best run of his MMA career, Masvidal had a remarkable 2019 and catapulted himself to one of the sport’s biggest stars, which included the inaugural “BMF” title.

But Masvidal is looking to make the most of the upcoming years because he only has plans of competing if he’s on top.

“I want to fight three more (expletive) years, is what I want to do – and at the highest level,” Masvidal told MMA Junkie during Thursday launch party for his new El Recuerdo mezcal. “I don’t want to be some bum dude that had a name – no, no, no. I want to be at the highest level when I walk away. It will be on my terms. It’s definitely going to be three years, though.”

Masvidal is the owner and brand ambassador for El Recuerdo. His career is flourishing in and out of the cage, and he is looking for an even more accomplished 2020.

“I want to separate myself like never before,” Masvidal said. “I want to leave all these guys (behind) – not just the guys in my weight now, I’m talking about performance-wise, pound-for-pound-wise. That’s something big. I broke into the top five maybe a couple of years ago, but I’m still to hit the pound-for-pound list. That’s obviously in the goals to conquer that.

“2019: PG-13 movie. 2020 is going to be a Rated R movie. Not everybody’s allowed to watch this. It’s going to be pure violence. It’s going to be a lot of it.”

A potential next opponent for Masvidal could be Conor McGregor, who returns Saturday against Donald Cerrone in the UFC 246 main event.

And should McGregor prevail, it could set up one of the biggest fights in UFC history.

“We’ve got Conor coming up,” Masvidal said. “Conor’s hinted to wanting to fight. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t – we don’t know what Conor’s really thinking. All we know is, I’ve got a task list. I can’t show it to the world, but I’ve got a nice task list. You think a lot of things that happened last year were by coincidence, but they’re not. A lot of those things were methodically planned to the point I had written down a lot of them and said, ‘These are the goals I’d like to accomplish this year.’”

Masvidal has made it clear that he won’t be waiting for anyone, though. All he knows is he’s looking for an active year, but with the right fights.

“The names, I can’t (know), but the frequency I would like to have covering all aspects would be two to four (fights) – no more than four,” he said. “And four would be special matches circumstances because we’re going for three MMA fights. If a boxing fight, if the right type of thing came in, we’re open to four bouts. I’m also 35, so I’ve gotta make sure my body’s is right.

“So we’re looking to do two to three, four if we need to.”
