UFC Rankings Adds New Division

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) decided to add a new division to its official rankings, but couldn’t quite figure out how to implement a women’s pound-for-pound class, so it just smashed the women and men together and had 30 athletes with duplicate numbers all jumbled together.

Witness the ugliness here and here.

After getting laughed at on Twitter, the UFC website quickly took down its entire rankings page and re-uploaded it without a pound-for-pound list. Then about an hour later it, re-added the new women’s division and gave it some real estate at the bottom.

Busy day for the UFC web team.

Now that we seem to have things sorted out, with the exception of the women’s featherweight rankings, which remains blank, we can focus on the big changes coming out of UFC Raleigh last weekend in North Carolina.

Like this.

Here’s how the rankings work, courtesy of UFC.com:

Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.

Take a look at what the latest rankings field looks like courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = movement in rankings, T = tie, *NR = Not previously ranked).
