Kamaru Usman warns Jorge Masvidal: You saw what I did to Colby Covington

Things are starting to really heat up between Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal.

Both UFC welterweight champion Usman (16-1 MMA, 11-0 UFC) and “BMF” belt winner Masvidal (35-13 MMA, 11-4 UFC) were at Super Bowl LIV’s Radio Row at the Miami Convention Center in Florida, where they engaged in a heated verbal altercation.

With neither man scheduled for a fight, all signs are pointing to Masvidal potentially being Usman’s next title defense.

Usman earned the first defense of his belt this past December, when he stopped longtime Masvidal training partner Colby Covington with a fifth-round TKO at UFC 245.

Usman, who lives and trains just a few miles away from Masvidal in Southern Florida, says Covington used to handle “Gamebred” in practice. With that knowledge in hand, Usman said Masvidal would be in for a long night if they do meet in the cage.

“He saw what I did to the guy that used to punish him and torture him everyday at practice,” Usman told TMZ. “He saw what I did. Now he better shut his little mouth before I fill his ass with a bunch of that Cuban coffee. Keep running his mouth, he ain’t going to nothing. He just ran up and he didn’t do nothing. I was dolo.”

“Talk all you want, but I’m going to let you know, just like I did to that guy that used to torture you everyday. I will fill your ass up with all that Cuban coffee.”

On Wednesday, the two had to be physically separated, but this time, there was no “three piece and a soda” from Masvidal. Following the very public yelling match, some wondered if the two fighters planned the spat, knowing full well that the world’s sporting media was gathered in the location.

Usman insists he was just there to take care of media obligations.

“No, that’s fake on his part,” Usman says. “I wasn’t here for that. I was here to do some media. I had a whole day jam-packed with media stuff to get done, but this guy wanted 10 seconds of fame. That’s what happens. They all want to come to champ and say, ‘Hey, look at me, look at me. Pay attention to me,’ and that’s all he wanted to do, and now we’re actually talking about him, so he got his point across because he had the camera guy. You saw that?

“He had a camera guy with him. He had what, like five or six guys with him. I was dolo. I’m at the whole media day, and what better way to do it than a room full of the world’s media. Come on, bro.”

Masvidal has said on numerous occasions that he wants whatever fight that will make him the most money, but with former two-division champ and megastar Conor McGregor’s next move unclear, he won’t sit around and wait for a potential “red panty night.” After an undeniable year with three stoppage wins, Masvidal has cemented himself as a top welterweight contender, placing him in a position to challenge for the UFC title.

Wednesday’s exchange may have planted the seed, but Usman says Masvidal is all bark but no bite.

“If he wanted to do something, if you really wanted the smoke, you said it yourself, you have the best sucker punch in the game, and the best 40-yard dash after that, so you had a clear line to me,” Usman said. “I was five feet away from you. If you wanted to do something, you could have did it, but he didn’t because he was all talk.”
