ONE Championship fighters comment on coronavirus causing closed-door fights

ONE Championship’s next event will go on – even if no one’s watching.

Scheduled for Feb. 28 at Singapore Indoor Stadium, “ONE Championship 109: King of the Jungle” will take place behind closed doors due to concerns about the spread of coronavirus.

While fighting in an empty arena is far from normal for these athletes, many seemed unfazed by the unusual circumstances.

“No it doesn’t effect (anything) for us,” ONE lightweight Amir Khan said. “I’m still in the gym everyday, training twice a day. I still run outdoors and stuff. I feel for this current situation I’d (advise) everyone maintain basic hygiene.”

Atomweight kickboxer and muay Thai fighter Janet Todd takes on Nong Stamp. She added, “It’s not the first time. As an amateur, the stadiums weren’t that, that full. It’s not going to be that crazy. I think I’ll enjoy having an empty stadium because when I land my kick, it’s going to echo through. That’ll be pretty cool.”

The event features a handful of MMA, kickboxing, and muay Thai fights. Atop the MMA portion of the card, Khan (12-6) battles Kimihiro Eto (16-5). Also featured, UFC alumnus Yoshihiro Akiyama (14-7) makes his MMA return against Sherif Mohamed (9-5).
