Adrian Guzman plans to get ‘tricky’ with Alejandro Martinez in Combate Americas 56 main event

Though he suffered the first loss of his career in 2019, lightweight Adrian Guzman feels the year was a positive one in the grand scheme of things.

Just three years into his MMA career, Guzman feels that anytime he can take from his experiences fighting it’s a worthwhile thing, win or lose.

“Last year was pretty good,” Guzman told MMAWeekly.com. “I won three fights and lost one fight. I was able to learn some things and get a little bit better, so last year was a good lesson for me, and now I’m ready to go for 2020.”

Though he was able to pick up three wins in 2019, Guzman admittedly didn’t fight as well as he could have, and has worked to overcome what he felt was holding him back the most last year.

“I feel like I performed okay, but not the best of my potential,” said Guzman. “I was more of an emotional fighter. I fought based off my emotions. But now this year I’m learning to control my emotions better. I feel mentally I’m more focused to start off this year.”

On Friday in Fresno, Calif., Guzman (6-1) will look to pick up his third straight win when he faces Alejandro Martinez (4-4) in the 155-pound main event of Combate Americas 56.

“He’s a pretty tough dude, a pretty good striker, seems like a strong guy,” Guzman said of Martinez. “In order to get the win against this guy I’ve got to make him uncomfortable. I plan to put a little bit of pressure on him.

“I’m not trying to stand and let him be technical with me – that’s what I’m looking to do – I don’t want him to be able to pick me apart, so I’ve got to be tricky with him and mix it up with him pretty good.”

For Guzman the outlook for 2020 is not only to be active, but not repeat the misstep he made last year.

“I’m looking to fight at least four times this year,” said Guzman. “I’ll start off with this one, and kind of take it fight by fight, but main goal is to stay undefeated the rest of this year.”
