NORFOLK, Va. – Megan Anderson would like to be next for a title shot. And she thinks she could be. However, the UFC featherweight isn’t ruling out other possibilities.
At UFC on ESPN+ 27, Anderson (10-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) flattened opponent Norma Dumont en route to a first-round TKO victory – but Anderson wasn’t the only notable female 145-pounder making a statement on the card.
In the co-main event of UFC on ESPN+ 27, former UFC title challenger Felicia Spencer made quick work of Zarah Fairn, picking up a first-round TKO of her own. The pair of performances got a reaction out of UFC women’s double champ Amanda Nunes on Twitter, as the bantamweight and featherweight titleholder sounds ready to defend the latter belt.
When speaking to the media after the event, Anderson laid out potential options for her next move. No matter which way the cookie crumbles, Anderson indicated she’ll be OK with it.
“I’m the only one that’s on a win streak,” Anderson told MMA Junkie. “I feel like I put my name on the list, particularly with such a great knockout. The UFC is going to do what the UFC wants to do. If they give it to Felicia, I think she’s an incredible competitor. I wouldn’t be surprised if they give it to her. If that’s the case, I’d love to fight again.”
She later continued, “Feeling like you’ve put in the work and put in the time doesn’t necessarily equate to a title shot these days. All I can control is putting on great performances. I feel like I’m doing that, showcasing my skills, and showcasing my potential as a star in this sport. I feel like that’s all I can do. If I do get the title shot, I’m game as (expletive). If not, I’m still going to be here and keep racking up the wins until I do get a title shot.”
The UFC may lean toward a title shot for Spencer, since Spencer defeated Anderson last year. If a title shot isn’t next, Anderson has two locations in mind where she’d like to fight next. The first is her home country, while the second is her adopted home city.
“The UFC is going to Perth, so I’d love to fight in Australia,” Anderson said. “If they come back to Kansas City, that’d be awesome. I’d love to be able to put on a performance (there). I’ve done Australia in the UFC and I’d love to be able to put on a performance in front of my adopted home of Kansas City. That’d be cool, too – if I’m not given the opportunity to fight for the title.”
UFC on ESPN+ 27 took place Saturday at Chartway Arena in Norfolk, Va. It streamed on ESPN+.
