UFC Statement On Status Of UFC 249

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White recently declared that the show must go on as far as UFC 249: ‘Khabib vs Ferguson’ goes, which is scheduled to go down on April 18.

This despite the fact that the mixed martial arts (MMA) organization is on lock down due to the current Covid-19 pandemic affecting the entire globe. The problem White and Co. are currently facing is trying to lock down a host site, as numerous states around the country, New York included, have imposed bans on fans attending any type of sporting event.

Other countries are following suit, as well.

Now, the promotion has officially released a statement updating the status of the much-anticipated event — which features a lightweight title fight between division king, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Tony Ferguson.

UFC is planning to move forward with UFC 249: KHABIB VS. FERGUSON in April. The event will not take place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn as previously announced. The decision was made in accordance with guidance issued by the New York State Athletic Commission, as well as in accordance with restrictions by New York State limiting large public gatherings. Additional details, including location and venue, will be announced when confirmed. Barclays Center ticket holders may seek a full refund at the point of purchase. Internet and phone orders will be automatically cancelled and refunded. UFC looks forward to returning to Brooklyn at the earliest opportunity.

Rumors had Dubai as a possible landing spot, but obviously no movement has been made on that front. Nevertheless, UFC officials are adamant that the event will go down on April 18. Where, however, remains to be seen.

That being said, don’t rule out the promotion postponing the event for a later date.
