The Nevada Athletic Commission won’t meet Wednesday.
In a Monday press release, NAC recording secretary Frankie Mason announced the meeting in Las Vegas has been canceled due to coronavirus safety concerns. The message reads:
“Please be advised that due to the ongoing concern and consideration of the health and safety of the public in regard to the COVID-19 virus, the Regular Monthly Meeting of the Nevada Athletic Commission scheduled for Wednesday March 25, 2020 at 9:00 AM has been cancelled. The Commission will determine at a later date when the next regularly scheduled meeting will be held.”
One of the main items of interest originally scheduled for the Wednesday meeting was a potential ruling on the immediate future of combat sports in Nevada. The NAC called an emergency meeting on March 14, in which it suspended all combat sports events from taking place inside its jurisdiction until March 25.
“With consideration of the health and safety of the public in regard to the COVID-19 virus, hearing pursuant to NRS 467.080, NRS 467. 105, and/or NAC 467.167, on the denial, revocation, conditioning or modification of all licenses and/or permits for programs of unarmed combat in Nevada that are scheduled to occur from March 25, 2020 to a date to be determined by the Commission,” the item read. “Discussion may include recommendations to the Commission from the Executive Director for an appropriate response to the COVID-19 virus, that observes the Commissions primary mandate to protect the health and safety of the public, for possible action.”
Last week, Nevada governor Steve Sisolak ordered non-essential businesses to close, including an extraordinary move to shut down Las Vegas’ casinos for 30 days, in order combat the spread of COVID-19.
The meeting’s cancelation means the combat sports shutdown in the state remains in effect.
