After Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) last month in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the promotion released this statement regarding the incident.

And not much else was heard from UFC officials, Dana White included, since.

Some were expecting the promotion to take action following Jon’s latest brush with the law, much like it did after he was involved in a hit and-run in “The Duke City” a few years back, which brought on a suspension and the loss of his 205-pound title. And that’s just what one top contender wants this time around, as Johnny Walker feels Jones should no longer be the promotion’s champion.

“If they take the title from him. Another two challengers should go for the belt and it would be good for the light-heavyweight division,” said Walker during a recent interview with Low Kick MMA.

Walker was once considered a legit threat to Jones despite his short run inside the Octagon. But after Corey Anderson knocked him out at UFC 244, the towering Brazilian’s championship dreams went up in smoke. Still, Walker thinks his idea of stripping Jones would be good for the division.

“Whoever gets the belt can fight against Jones next it’s going to be good. I’m no god to judge nobody but I think it’s a good idea to do that (strip Jon Jones) because it’s going to give other fighters the chance to get the belt and to help their life and be somebody, to be a champion. If Jon Jones wants to keep his belt, he can just stop doing sh*t and he can defend the belt properly.”

Much to the chagrin of Walker, if the promotion hasn’t stripped Jones of his title by now, it likely won’t do so.

“Bones” reached a plea deal that earned him a year of supervised probation. Afterward, the 205-pound champion apologized for his latest legal transgression and vowed to do better moving forward.

As it stands, once the promotion gets back to the swing of things, Jones’ next title defense is likely to come against Jan Blachowicz, who earned his shot at the strap by starching Corey Anderson at UFC Rio Rancho last February (see it).
