Edgar Eyes Bantamweight Debut In June

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar was expected to make his bantamweight debut against Cory Sandhagen at UFC Raleigh back in January; however, an emergency call from matchmakers instead put him against Chan Sung Jung at UFC Busan.

That featherweight bout ended in disaster and served as a reminder as to why Edgar was changing weight classes in the first place, but “The Answer” has no regrets over taking the “Korean Zombie” fight and looks forward to playing with “new toys” at 135 pounds.

“I took an opportunity,” Edgar told MMA Fighting while appearing on What the Heck. “I don’t regret taking the opportunity looking back. It was a loss and that always sucks, because I can’t go back and change those things. I stacked the cards against myself more so than usual.”

Edgar, 38, has struggled to keep himself in the win column over the last couple of years but his name value and championship experience are expected to put him against a Top 10 opponent right out of the gate.

“I don’t know who I’m going to get matched up with, but it will be someone along those lines (of Sandhagen),” he said. “I wanted to fight in June before [the coronavirus pandemic] went down, and now I see that May 9 is tentatively scheduled. So we’ll see what happens there. But I’d like to get back in there (for June) ideally.”
