Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has a new welterweight No. 1 contender in the form of Gilbert Burns, who rocketed to the top spot with his five-round unanimous decision victory over Tyron Woodley at the UFC on ESPN 9 mixed martial arts (MMA) event last weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Burns. B-U-R-N-S.

I’m spelling it out because “nobody knows who that guy is.” Well, that’s according to the No. 2-ranked contender, Colby Covington, who believes Woodley’s loss to “Durinho” will change the trajectory of the 170-pound division and put “Chaos” into a grudge match opposite “Street Judas” Jorge Masvidal.

“I could care less,” Covington said about a Burns title shot (via Submission Radio). “Nobody knows who that guy is. Let them fight. That just means the biggest fight in the welterweight division has opened the door, and that’s me versus ‘Street Judas’ Masvidal. Everybody knows that’s a real beef and that score needs to be settled. ‘Judas’ Masvidal, he’s got nowhere to go. We know he ducked Marty ‘Fake Newsman’ but he’s got no other fights to be made. The biggest fight that can happen is the man, me, versus the loser, ‘Street Judas’ Masvidal.”

Covington and Masvidal were close friends at one point and shared the American Top Team (ATT) gym. Then came welterweight title runs from both combatants where Covington claims “Gamebred” tried to take away his money fight and went from homie to enemy.

“Chaos” has since parted ways with ATT.

The promotion has yet to make an official announcement on who will battle Kamaru Usman for the 170-pound title, but in addition to Covington, Masvidal, and Burns, Leon Edwards (No. 5) also has a shot at getting his hands on “The Nigerian Nightmare.”

Expect official word sooner, rather than later.
