Biggest Winners, Loser For UFC on ESPN 10

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) kept the train chugging along last night (Sat., June 13, 2020) by staging UFC on ESPN 10 from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the main event, Cynthia Calvillo defeated Jessica Eye after five rounds of women’s Flyweight action (see it). In the co-headlining, act, Marvin Vettori scored a first round submission win over Karl Roberson, ending their somewhat bitter feud (see it again here).

Biggest Winner: Cynthia Calvillo

Calvillo earned a huge win by outclassing Jessica Eye for 25 minutes en route to scoring a unanimous decision win in what was her UFC Flyweight debut. To sweeten the victory, Eye was ranked No. 1 in the division, which means nothing but good things for Calvillo. Immediately after her win, many in the MMA world called for Calvillo to get division queen, Valentina Shevchenko, next. And with the weight class still playing itself out with no clear-cut No. 1 contender, don’t be surprised if the promotion pulls the trigger on that title fight, assuming Joanne Calderwood doesn’t get the nod. For now, Calvillo can enjoy her win, which is her third in last four outings with the other result being a draw. It was a staple win which could help her get back on Dana White’s radar as a potential future star for the promotion.

Runner (s) Up: Christian Aguilera, Tyson Nam and Julia Avila

That’s right, were going with the trifecta here as all three of those aforementioned combatants started off the card with a bang, ending all of their respective bouts via knockout…in under a minute. That is the first time that has ever happened at a UFC event, and perhaps in any organization ever. Aguilera made a splash in his UFC debut by knocking out Anthony Ivy in the first round, while Nam gave Zarrukh Adashev a rude welcome to the Octagon, knocking him out in just 32 seconds. Nam also secured his UFC future for a little while longer by ending his two-fight skid. Aguilera and Nam also walked away with $50K in post-fight bonus cash. Avila, meanwhile, knocked out Gina Mazany in just 22 seconds, though she was left out in the cold when it came to a performance bonus.

Biggest Loser: Mark De La Rosa

Yes, Jessica Eye’s loss was catastrophic for her hopes of getting back to a title shot, and yes she is going to lose out on 20-percent of her purse for coming in heavy, but we will talk about “Evil” in our Monday Morning Hangover post. For now, let’s talk about De La Rosa’s horrid run in the last 15 months. Coming into the event, we decided that De La Rosa was the one who needed a win in a bad way after losing three straight. And he wasn’t able to deliver, as he fell to Jordan Espinosa via unanimous decision. So after starting off his career at 11-1, 2-1 UFC, Mark has now dropped four in a row, leaving him in a bad position when it comes time for the promotion to start thinning the herd. And it’s something that could start happening, according to one UFC Hall of Famer, later this summer.
