Viral elbow knockout artist Jose Johnson meets Ronnie Lawrence at Dana White’s Contender Series on Sept. 1

When Jose Johnson elbowed Rafael Costa at LFA 78, it didn’t take long for his handiwork to go viral. Media and fans shared the elbow all over social media.

However, they apparently weren’t the only admirers. The UFC took notice and is currently working on a Sept. 1 fight that will pin Johnson (11-5 MMA) against fellow bantamweight up-and-comer Ronnie Lawrence on Dana White’s Contender Series.

Multiple people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie of the targeted booking Thursday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Cageside Press was the first to report the news.

The Sept. 1 installment of DWCS, Season 4 will be the fourth episode. The season kicks off Aug. 4 and is expected to run for 10 episodes.

Johnson, 25, has turned his career around after a 6-5 start. In his last five fights, Johnson has gone 5-0 with five first-round finishes due to strikes. He’s competed for various notable regional promotions including LFA, Fury FC, and XKO.

Lawrence (5-1 MMA) has garnered much attention on the regional scene for his flashy striking abilities. His lone loss, a decision, was dropped to now-UFC featherweight Steve Garcia at Bellator 162 in October 2016. Before turning pro, Lawrence compiled a 13-1 amateur record.
