Sean Shelby’s Shoes: What’s next for Dustin Poirier after UFC on ESPN 12 win?

Dustin Poirier put himself back on the map as a lightweight contender on Saturday when he emerged victorious from a memorable bout with Dan Hooker in the UFC on ESPN 12 main event.

Poirier (26-6 MMA, 18-5 UFC) rebounded from his title unification fight loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in September when he emerged on the upside of a unanimous deicsion over Hooker (20-9 MMA, 10-5 UFC) in the headliner at UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

With the win, “The Diamond” reentered the title discussion at 155 pounds and become one of the 10 winningest fighters in UFC history.

That can only set Poirier up for big things in one of the most talent-crowded weight classes in the sport. But who should he fight next?

Tony Ferguson (25-4 MMA, 15-2 UFC) appears to be the frontrunner in the mind of most, but is it what makes most sense? Watch the video above for thoughts and analysis on Poirier’s future after UFC on ESPN 12.
