Poirier Slides Past Ferguson In Latest UFC Rankings

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier has taken over the No. 2 spot in the official 155-pound rankings, thanks to his unanimous decision victory — and “Fight of the Night” performance — against Dan Hooker in the UFC on ESPN 12 main event last weekend in Las Vegas.

That drops Tony Ferguson down one spot to No. 3.

Poirier also cracked the Top 10 on the pound-for-pound list and his position at No. 8 puts him two places ahead of Justin Gaethje. That makes things a bit messy in terms of the bigger picture, as “The Highlight” is ranked higher than “The Diamond” at 155 pounds. Not that anyone takes these rankings seriously but it’s more proof that MMA math never works.

Example: Dustin Poirier beat Justin Gaethje who beat Tony Ferguson who beat Danny Castillo who beat Dustin Poirier who beat Jim Miller who beat Danny Castillo who beat Ricardo Lamas who beat Cub Swanson who beat Dustin Poirier.

You could run yourself in circles all day with this crap.

Anyway, let’s get to the updated rankings, but first here’s a refresher on how everything works, courtesy of UFC.com:

Rankings were generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.
