UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, once again plays host to a night of mixed martial arts (MMA) action this Saturday evening (Aug. 8, 2020), led by fearsome Heavyweights Derrick Lewis and Aleksei Oleinik. UFC Vegas 6 will also feature a pair of Middleweight tussles pitting Chris Weidman and Darren Stewart against Omari Akhmedov and Maki Pitolo, respectively, as well as Yana Kunitskaya versus The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) veteran Julija Stoliarenko.

What Went Wrong at UFC Vegas 5?

It’s hard to make a noteworthy profit when three of your five picks don’t even make it to the cage, but the two survivors thankfully pulled their weight. Bobby Green decisively settled the score against Lando Vannata and Vicente Luque leveled Randy Brown (watch highlights) to keep the crippled bets afloat.

Thoughts: Andrew Sanchez looks like the best bargain on the card, while Tim Means is worth a small investment in his own right.

Though Sanchez is hobbled by subpar cardio, Wellington Turman lacks the output and striking skills to exploit it the way Anthony Smith and Marvin Vettori did. The Brazilian relies almost entirely on his wrestling to win fights, which doesn’t seem like a terribly effective approach against someone with 100 percent UFC takedown defense and some offensive takedowns of his own. Sanchez has the better stand up and the more proven grappling, making him a solid underdog pick.

At 36 years old and with nearly 45 professional MMA bouts under his belt, Tim Means likely has a foot out the door. He’s still got a massive technical edge over Laureano Staropoli, whose most notable Octagon work came against the very limited Hector Aldana and the very past-it Thiago Alves. Means has the sharper stand up and some decent wrestling with which to mix things up. Indeed, even with his fading durability, he’s got enough advantages here to be worth a bit.

Thoughts: Derrick Lewis and Beneil Dariush stand out among the favorites, the latter slightly more-so than the former.

Aleksei Oleinik makes up for his lack of explosiveness or high-level wrestling with sheer relentlessness, swinging away without fear until he can tie up and try to work his magic. One simply can’t be that neglectful of their defense against Lewis’ horrifying power, and even if Oleinik does manage to get an early takedown or two, Lewis’ “just stand up” method should pay dividends considering his ostensible strength advantage. To make matters worse for “Boa Constrictor,” he can’t maintain that murderous pace for long, while Lewis remains dangerous from bell to bell. Oleinik is just too slow and too easy a target for Lewis not to clip at some point, so bet on “Black Beast.”

Dariush’s 0-2-1 stretch a couple years back have left him rather underrated; however, he remains one of the most effective grapplers in the division and a highly effective pressure striker. On the other side, Holtzman’s physical gifts have consistently failed to carry him past top-level opposition. Dariush looks to hold the technical edge in striking, wrestling and submissions on top of a three-inch reach advantage and a more impressive body of work in the Octagon. He should win comfortably on the feet or the mat; therefore, be in position to benefit.
