UFC On ESPN 15 Odds, Under Dogs And Best Bets!

One of the Bantamweight division’s most dangerous finishers welcomes a former champion to 135 pounds this Saturday (Aug. 22, 2020) when Pedro Munhoz headlines UFC on ESPN 15, which takes place inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, against former Lightweight kingpin, Frankie Edgar. Meanwhile, 80 pounds north, Alonzo Menifield attempts to rebound from his first-ever defeat by facing Ovince Saint Preux on short notice and Mike Rodriguez faces Marcin Prachnio in a clash of knockout artists.

UFC on ESPN 15 is free on terrestrial television, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get money involved. Let’s beef up that balance!

What Went Wrong at UFC 252?

Virna Jandiroba, Stipe Miocic and Jairzinho Rozenstruik all came up huge, making for an extremely successful event. Unfortunately, Herbert Burns came in overweight and half-dead, resulting in a one-sided defeat that also erased Chris Daukaus’ good work on Fight Pass. Still, a win’s a win.

UFC On ESPN 15 Odds For The Under Card:

Mariya Agapova (-1250) vs. Shana Dobson (+800)
Joe Solecki (-150) vs. Austin Hubbard (+130)
Ike Villanueva (-130) vs. Jorge Gonzalez (+110)
Carlton Minus (-135) vs. Matthew Semelsberger (+115)
Timur Valiev (-525) vs. Mark Striegl (+415)

Thoughts: Joe Solecki is the star of the show this time around, with Ike Villanueva right behind.

Austin Hubbard’s takedown defense has long been a significant weakness — Davi Ramos, Mark O. Madsen and Max Rohskopf combined to take him down 13 times. And unlike Rohskopf, Solecki isn’t going to immediately gas or crumble under pressure. Hubbard’s attrition striking and impressive gas tank aren’t going to be much use when he’s stuck on his back, and Solecki’s submission skills make getting out from underneath him a tall task. Considering that Solecki can also hold his own in the striking, he looks like a safe investment from where I’m sitting.

Jorge Gonzalez has impressive power and, well, nothing else. He’s slow, easy to hit and tends to throw profoundly ugly punches, relying on his heavy hands to bail him out. Villanueva’s got huge advantages in speed and boxing technique, plus a bit of wrestling ability to potentially exploit Gonzalez’s poor ground game. Though Gonzalez hits hard enough to make betting against him risky, I like Villanueva to tear him up on the feet.

Gonzalez withdrew from the fight, leaving Contender Series veteran Jordan Wright in his place. The lines for that fight are not yet available.

Parlay these two with Timur Valiev for a little extra dosh (he’s got Mark Striegl badly out-classed in the striking).

Also, on this week’s, “I’ll be angry at myself if I don’t bet on them” section, Carlton Minus. His ramrod jab and constant motion look to give the straightforward Matthew Semelsberger fits.

Pedro Munhoz (-255) vs. Frankie Edgar (+215)
Alonzo Menifield (-135) vs. Ovince St. Preux (+115)
Mike Rodriguez (-235) vs. Marcin Prachnio (+195)
Daniel Rodriguez (-190) vs. Takashi Sato (+165)
Mizuki Inoue (-140) vs. Amanda Lemos (+120)

Thoughts: It’s unclear to me why Ovince Saint Preux is the underdog in the co-feature.

Alonzo Menifield’s technical limitations were on full display against Devin Clark just two months ago, and while “OSP” has struggled recently, he’s still a hell of a lot more proven than his short-notice opponent. On top of that, Saint Preux is three inches taller than Menifield and will have a four-inch reach advantage, further compounding the latter’s difficulties. Saint Preux’s non-existent volume makes him a risky investment, but between his length and his wrestling, he’s got the goods to ruin Menifield’s day.

On a similar note to Minus above, put a bit on Mizuki Inoue. She’s infinitely more proven than Amanda Lemos, who doesn’t have the tools that have troubled Inoue in the past.
