Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is hoping to bring mixed martial arts (MMA) fans an action-packed pay-per-view (PPV) event for Dec. 12, which would include the five-round welterweight main event between division champion Kamaru Usman and recovering top contender Gilbert Burns.

That’s according to a report from TMZ, which did not specify a city or venue.

Also in discussions for UFC 256 is the 170-pound rematch between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz, who first went to war for the “BMF” belt last November. ESPN reports the date for that showdown could be pushed back until January, depending on the timeline of each combatant.

So much for that “retirement.”

Neither the Usman-Burns headliner nor the Masvidal-Diaz do-over is a done deal but the promotion is hoping to put pen to paper at some point within the next few days. No word yet on whether or not “Gamebred” will be asked to put his much-maligned strap up for grabs.

The welterweight division is a bit muddled at the moment but should sort itself out by year’s end. The Colby Covington vs. Tyron Woodley grudge match at UFC Vegas 11 will eliminate one contender, leaving Leon Edwards as the odd-man out (yet again).
