UFC Vegas 9 Odds, Under Dogs And Best Bets!

With four Octagon victories under his belt, Brazilian bruiser Augusto Sakai will attempt to claim his biggest name to date when he faces Alistair Overeem in the main event of UFC Vegas 9, which takes place this weekend (Sat., Sept. 5, 2020) inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. Meanwhile, 60 pounds south, Ovince Saint Preux’s delayed matchup with Alonzo Menifield finds a new home, while Sijara Eubanks meets fast-rising Karol Rosa in a Bantamweight crossroads fight.

What Went Wrong at UFC Vegas 8?

Aside from an admittedly risky bet on Maki Pitolo not paying off, things went pretty smoothly, even if Mallory Martin did just about give me a heart attack before turning things around. We’ve reached four digits for the first time this year; therefore, let’s see if we can’t keep it there.

UFC Vegas 9 Odds For The Under Card:

Bartosz Fabinski (-145) vs. Andre Muniz (+125)
Viviane Araujo (-175) vs. Montana De La Rosa (+155)
Alexander Romanov (-115) vs. Marcos Rogerio de Lima (-105)
Hunter Azure (-210) vs. Cole Smith (+175)

Thoughts: Alexander Romanov opened as a +135 underdog, which would have been an unmissable line, he’s still got some value.

Marcos Rogerio de Lima has truly monstrous power and has developed some decent takedown chops in the last few years, but he’s just as incompetent off of his back as when he first joined the UFC back in 2014. Combine that with his paltry 36 percent takedown defense and the fact that he’s carrying at least 20 pounds of excess weight and you’ve got a recipe for trouble against Romanov. While the Moldovan has yet to face top competition, he’s extremely big, extremely strong, a capable wrestler, and a destructive force once he gets on top. So long as he doesn’t dally on the feet, “King Kong” should be able to manhandle “Pezao” and brutalize him on the mat without issue.

I’m also liking the odds on Viviane Araujo, even if she is coming off of a loss. Montana De La Rosa lacks the wrestling to impose her excellent top game on Araujo, who’s yet to be taken down in the Octagon and even turned aside takedowns from Alexis Davis despite being visibly winded. The Brazilian also has her beat on the feet, and though she does tend to fade, De La Rosa’s standup skills are insufficient to overcome even a tired “Vivi.” In the end, Araujo figures to take a comfortable victory.

UFC Vegas 9 Odds For The Main Card:

Alistair Overeem (-145) vs. Augusto Sakai (+125)
Alonzo Menifield (-130) vs. Ovince Saint Preux (+110)
Karol Rosa (-130) vs. Sijara Eubanks (EVEN)

Thiago Moises (-175) vs. Jalin Turner (+155)

Thoughts: To copy-paste (with some slight adjustments) from the last time Menifield and Saint Preux were set to go at it:

Alonzo Menifield’s technical limitations were on full display against Devin Clark just three months ago, and while “OSP” has struggled recently, he’s still a hell of a lot more proven than his opponent. On top of that, Saint Preux is three inches taller than Menifield and will have a four-inch reach advantage, further compounding the latter’s difficulties. Saint Preux’s non-existent volume makes him a risky investment, but between his length and his wrestling, he’s got the goods to ruin Menifield’s day.

Besides that, I like Karol Rosa to beat Sijara Eubanks. As seen against Bethe Correia, Eubanks’ stand up hasn’t developed to the point where she can consistently win fights without scoring takedowns, and Rosa has yet to be dragged to the mat in the Octagon. The Brazilian’s high-volume striking attack figures to out-class “Sarj’s” powerful-but-rudimentary offense, allowing her to sprawl-and-brawl to victory.

For this week’s long shot pick, try parlaying Bartosz Fabinski with Augusto Sakai. Fabinski’s “land a million takedowns without ever attacking enough to be in submission danger” strategy looks like a good counter to Andre Muniz’s grappling attack and Sakai — limited as he is — has a brick for a chin and carries his power late.
