MMA rankings report, Sept 9: Where does Alistair Overeem rate after big win?

Alistair Overeem is a legendary figure in combat sports, but he’s still got a few things left he wants to accomplish.

Chiefly, “The Demolition Man” wants to claim the UFC heavyweight title. With his win this past weekend over Augusto Sakai (15-2-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC), Overeem (47-18 MMA, 12-7 UFC) moved a few spots higher in this week’s edition of the USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, landing at No. 6 in the heavyweight division.

With No. 1 Stipe Miocic and No. 2 Francis Ngannou set to contest the UFC heavyweight title in the next few months, and No. 3 Curtis Blaydes facing No. 4 Derrick Lewis, perhaps a rematch with No. 5 Jairzinho Rozenstruik lies on the horizon.

That wasn’t the only movement coming out of UFC on ESPN+ 34. Ovince Saint Preux had a head-turning knockout victory over Alonzo Menifield, which puts him back into the mix in the light heavyweight division.

So before we turn our full attention to the upcoming big weekend of Bellator and UFC action, MMA Junkie’s John Morgan and George Garcia break down all the rankings moves in this week’s MMA rankings report.
