Sabina Mazo has eyes set on UFC flyweight title, but wants to test waters at 135 pounds

Sabina Mazo could be competing in two different weight classes in the near future.

The 23-year-old flyweight prospect wants to start taking fights at 135 pounds and test her luck in the bantamweight division. Mazo doesn’t want to abandon the weight class where she became a champion in LFA but is interested in fighting at both flyweight and bantamweight.

“Something that I’m planning for my future is to have fights at 135 pounds,” Mazo said on Monday’s episode of “Hablemos MMA.” “I want to have more fights in that division, but my goal is still to go up in the rankings at 125 pounds.”

Mazo (8-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC), who’s set to fight this Saturday at UFC on ESPN+ 35 against Justine Kish (7-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) at UFC Apex in Las Vegas, doesn’t rule out a potential, permanent move to bantamweight. However, as of now, “The Colombian Queen” has her sights set on UFC gold at flyweight.

“I’m open to possibilities,” Mazo said. “Like I said, I want the belt at 125 pounds, and that’s my plan, but I want to have fights at 135 pounds, too. That division has bit more structure than 125 pounds, and why not? I think it would be a great tool for me to grow as a fighter.”

The Colombian prospect is currently on a two-fight winning streak in the UFC. Mazo feels a win over Kish on Saturday could unlock her ranked opposition for her future UFC bouts.

“Totally, top 10, top 15,” Mazo said regarding the type of opponents she’d like to see if victorious against Kish. “I don’t want to call out names, but I want people in the rankings. Because like you said, everyone in the division is good, and I want to get to the top. I know that if I keep doing a good job, sooner or later I will be in the rankings.”
