Free Fight! Moraes Avenges Assuncao Loss Via Submission

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

Marlon Moraes will look to insert himself right in the thick of the championship picture this Saturday night (Oct. 10, 2020) as he takes on surging Bantamweight contender, Cory Sandhagen, in the main event of UFC Fight Island 5 on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Before then, let’s take a trip down Memory Lane to relive one of “Magic’s” best performances inside the Octagon. In February of 2019, Moraes found himself locked in the Octagon with Raphael Assuncao for the second time. Two years prior, Assuncao stunned Moraes in what was his UFC debut, defeating him via split decision at UFC 212.

This time around, however, Moraes was determined not to let the fight go to the judges. After a brief exchange on the feet, “Magic” tagged Assuncao with a right hand that dropped him. From there, the Brazilian bomber jumped into his opponents guard and started to work some ground-and-pound. In a scramble, Moraes managed to get into position to sink in a guillotine choke.

A few moments later, Assuncao was tapping for dear life.

After coming up short in his quest to win UFC gold in his following fight against Henry Cejudo, Moraes bounced back nicely with a win over Jose Aldo. If he can score his second straight win against a streaking Sandhagen, he could very well make a case for another shot at UFC gold.
