UFC Fight Island 6 odds: Latest Vegas lines and betting guide for ‘Ortega vs Korean Zombie’

Two former title challengers with oodles of bad blood between them will look to settle the score on “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, this Saturday (Oct. 17, 2020) when Brian Ortega squares off with “The Korean Zombie,” Chan Sung Jung. Also on tap is a late-notice women’s Flyweight bout between Katlyn Chookagian and former Strawweight champion Jessica Andrade.

We’re just one week away from UFC 254, and that means it’s time to get pay-per-view (PPV) and snacking money. Let’s dig in …

What Went Wrong at UFC Fight Island 5?

I didn’t expect Impa Kasanganay to be on the wrong end of an honest-to-God Tekken move (watch it again), but everyone else picked up the slack. Strong underdog performances from Chris Daukaus and Marcin Tybura joined expected victories from Tagir Ulanbekov, Tony Kelley, Tom Aspinall and Edson Barboza to make a successful evening overall.

UFC Fight Island 6 Odds For The Undercard:

Mateusz Gamrot (-280) vs. Guram Kutateladze (+240)
Gillian Robertson (-225) vs. Poliana Botelho (+185)
James Krause (-165) vs. Claudio Silva (+145)
Jun Yong Park (-255) vs. John Phillips (+215)
Maxim Grishin (-350) vs. Gadzhimurad Antigulov (+290)
Said Nurmagomedov (-420) vs. Mark Striegl (+335)
Jamie Mullarkey (-140) vs. Fares Ziam (+120)

Thoughts: The ever-reliable Gillian Robertson looks like a strong pick, as do Jun Yong Park and Jamie Mullarkey. Claudio Silva seems like a decent underdog, too.

Poliana Boltelho is unquestionably a powerhouse, but the last time she faced a wrestler and submission artist of Robertson’s caliber, she failed to last a round against Cynthia Calvillo. “The Savage” has the tools to take her down early and, if the submission isn’t there, continue doing so until the opportunity presents itself.

In short, go big on Robertson to smash her on the mat.

John Phillips is terrible. He’s utterly refused to develop any sort of defensive wrestling or technical striking to support his monumental power, leaving him unable to actually knockout UFC-caliber fighters unless they charge headlong into his left hand. Park has both the boxing prowess to hold his own on the feet and the wrestling chops to exploit Phillips’ nonexistent ground game as so many others have before, making him a safe pick despite Phillips’ heavy hands.

Both Jamie Mullarkey and Fares Ziam faced striking specialists in their UFC debuts. Mullarkey held his own against a world-class bruiser in Brad Riddell before fading late, while Ziam got controlled and out-wrestled by Don Madge. Mullarkey’s takedown skills are enough to repeat Madge’s efforts and I’m not convinced Ziam has any sort of advantage on the feet.

In other words, bank on the undervalued Aussie.

Year after year I bet against Claudio Silva and year after year he keeps winning. He’s as one-dimensional as they come at 170 pounds, but nobody’s found a way to make him pay. James Krause has had issues with dedicated wrestlers in the past, so I’m willing to recommend a bit on “Hannibal.”

Both Said Nurmagomedov and Mateusz Gamrot look like fairly safe parlay stuffers, as Nurmagomedov badly out-classes Mark Striegl on the feet and Gamrot’s wrestling should be sufficient to shut down Guram Kutateladze’s striking attack.

UFC Fight Island 6 Odds For The Main Card:

Chan Sung Jung (-185) vs. Brian Ortega (+160)
Ciryl Gane (-525) vs. Ante Delija (+415)
Jessica Andrade (-145) vs. Katlyn Chookagian (+125)
Jim Crute (-340) vs. Modestas Bukauskas (+280)
Thomas Almeida (-120) vs. Jonathan Martinez (EVEN)

Thoughts: Thomas Almeida was a slight underdog for a time, but between his durability issues and lengthy layoff, it’s probably best to stay away unless he slips into the positives. Instead, let’s go with the “Zombie.”

With the possible exception of Diego Brandao back in 2016, Chan Sung Jung is the nastiest puncher Ortega’s yet faced, and he’s not going to gas or succumb to pressure the way “Ceara” did. Jung’s a good enough wrestler to keep it standing and should have a field day teeing off on “T-City’s” unmoving head. Unless Jung willingly sticks his neck in Ortega’s guillotine, he should tear him to pieces in the stand up.
