Shields Wants You To Bow Down And Kiss Her Feet

Shields insists her comment was made “in a way of being a conqueror and not being jerk,” according to her explanation on Twitter.

I think Claressa Shields has it backwards.

Especially when you consider that she won two Olympic gold medals and multiple world titles in boxing but has yet — by her own admission — to fight for a million dollars competing in combat sports. So perhaps MMA fans are the ones who deserve the rose petals.

Especially since they can help decide whether or not she achieves superstardom.

“MMA fans need to bow down and kiss my feet and throw rose petals because I’m actually making the transition,” Shields told Bleacher Report. “I’m not just saying it. I’m actually doing it. So give me my props. Never say that Claressa Shields is scared of nobody.”

Demetrious Johnson proved that dominance can’t always be monetized.

Shields recently signed with Professional Fighters League (PFL) and is expected to enter the promotion’s lightweight tournament in 2022. In the interim, the Michigan native will continue to compete in the “sweet science.”

“I love how the PFL has a season where they give all their fighters the chance to control their own destiny,” Shields said. “You get to fight for a million dollars if you work your way up to it. In boxing, I’ve done everything you can do: world titles, multiple divisions, broken records, undisputed. I still haven’t made a million dollars for a fight yet.”

Like Amanda Serrano before her, Shields is coming over to MMA because that’s where the money is. No question she’s a brilliant pugilist with an impeccable resume, but I still think Judo master Kayla Harrison pretzels her if and when they meet in the PFL finals.

I dunno … just a feeling.
